Employees may require other benefits when salaries are low

When a startup's employee pool expands beyond its founders, expectations often begin to surge. Unfortunately, it may take quite some time for worker salaries to follow suit. In these instances, a business may need to conduct a CEO search to find talented executives who have experience keeping employee satisfaction high and retaining talented workers, even when a company's finances are tight.

Most experts suggest that businesses work toward creating a workplace environment that employees want to be a part of. This means empowering workers so that they feel their talents are being utilized properly and that they have a vested interest in the success of the company. Experts caution that if employees think that their input is not valuable, the quality of their work may suffer.

Some employees may benefit from the option to work remotely. Technology now allows many workers to complete tasks at home, which can reduce employee stress by eliminating a potentially extended commute.

Other companies, such as Google, try to create an informal work environment. This setup works for Google because many of its workers do not directly interact with its customers and clients on a daily basis, but other companies can still adopt some of the tenets used by this successful company, such as abolishing the dress code.

"You have to touch the heart of what is considered fun for the people that work for you," Tamara Erickson, of management consulting and research firm The Concours Group, told Forbes Magazine. "Companies that are good at retention are engaging people. They hire people who fit in there. The ones that are good at it tend to be a bit odd. They do things that are different."

While an unorthodox work environment may not keep every employee content, an executive recruiter can be hired to seek out talented C-level leaders who have previously enjoyed success through unconventional methods. Outside-the-box thinking from the corner office may be the solution to worker disengagement that many companies require.
